Niche Blog Friday: Robot Apocalypse November 20, 2009

Forget the spelling errors; forget the colloquial tone; forget the sporadic posting; but most of all forget (or embrace) the paranoid-touching-on-schizophrenic rantings and you will enjoy this blog. Not surprisingly, many of the posts link to the ever sensationalist (and thus engaging) New Scientist. The authors also tend to gloss over the details of the articles they find (i.e. suggesting invisibility is possible when the article clearly states it is only possible in “infrared light”). The blog is run by three people of which little is known except that one of them loves bacon and will not date you.

Whatever; it’s Friday; enjoy! Robot Apocalypse

Today we introduce another regular feature, inspired by the Twitter meme Webseries Wednesday. Each week we’ll point our readers towards our favorite webseries. This week, we start off with Unshelved a webcomic about life in a Public Library.

Like standard newspaper comics, the strip is published daily in black and white, with a full color extended strip on Sundays. Each Sunday the strip features a book review, which they call the Sunday Book Club.

Its a clever strip that can be appreciated by anyone who works with people, even if not in a library. Enjoy!

Today the Infomavens announce a new weekly feature: Niche Blog Friday, mostly because the extremely specific blogs that are out there can be astounding and quite hilarious. As we were discussing this idea, lo and behold – Mental Floss released an article on such blogs. Here’s their compilation of niche blogs, and we will have plenty more to follow in the coming weeks.  (People of Walmart is a personal fave and Hotel Bed Jumping is pretty creative!)

A section of the internet portion of a secret Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement has leaked onto the web (how ironic) and basically states that the rules governing copyright on the internet will deem you (and your family and anyone else using your ISP) guilty immediately upon suspected infringement of copyright and cut off all access to the web. As access to the web is increasingly considered a legal right (Finland goes as far to consider broadband a legal right) I think this agreement is clearly in violation of our rights as Americans! Check out what exactly this entails in the words of Cory Doctorow.

Working on an astronomy bibliography today reminded me of one of my favorite blogs: Awful library books where one can peruse the annals of books that should have been tossed long ago.  That is not to say that some of the books wouldn’t be great contributions to archives cataloging the evolution of human thought, culture, and technology . This site takes contributions from all over and is, besides an important reminder to librarians who refuse to throw anything away, extremely humorous.

This is our inaugural post! The “Infomavens” come from an eclectic background that you can check out under PupFiction and DataDuchess pages.  And don’t forget to check out what we are all about.

I’m going to start this blog off with a bang and bring up one of the most interesting debates going on in the information world: Is broadband a legal right? Or, in other words, should it be? Finland certainly thinks so. What do you think?
